The Village Where the Most Powerful Guardian Spirit Sleeps (Yamaguchi Reijin Shrine)

One of Japan’s three great tanuki legends tells of Inugami Gyōbu, the chieftain who commanded 808 shape-shifting Japanese raccoon dogs (tanuki). It is said that his mystical powers were so great that he could even control the weather. Having long protected the people of Matsuyama, he was revered not as a monster but as a god. However, during the Edo period, he became entangled in the political struggles of the Matsuyama Domain and was unwillingly regarded as part of a rebellion. In the end, his powers were sealed by the sacred sword Kiku Ichimonji, wielded by the retainer Inō Budayū. Yet, in recognition of his many achievements, he came to be enshrined in this land.
Within the shrine grounds stand numerous statues of tanuki, creating a unique atmosphere where mystery and local history blend together. Located about 25 minutes by car from Matsuyama IC, it is an ideal spot to experience the world of yokai legends on a leisurely drive.
