旧遊郭が大変身！道後に洗練された新エリアが誕生

「色里や十歩はなれて秋の風」俳人正岡子規が、同居していた夏目漱石と道後温泉に入浴した後、宝厳寺の山門に腰かけて上人坂を詠んだ句です。
道後温泉から歩いてすぐのこの通りは、もと遊郭街。坂の左右に女郎屋が並び、坂を登りきった突き当りには、鎌倉仏教で有名な一遍上人の生誕地「宝厳寺」がある。参道が遊郭なんて、なんとも不思議な場所だったのです。
１００年の時を経た今、遊女が生きたこの坂は、おしゃれな施設や飲食店、文化施設が軒を連ね、新たな観光エリアへと生まれ変わっています。

A Former Red-Light District Transformed! A Chic New Area Emerges in Dogo

“This haiku, ‘In the pleasure quarter, ten steps away—the autumn wind,’ was composed by haiku poet Shiki Masaoka after he and his housemate Soseki Natsume bathed in Dogo Onsen and then sat at the gate of Hogon-ji Temple, reflecting on Shoninzaka.
Just a short walk from Dogo Onsen, this street was once a red-light district. Brothels lined both sides of the slope, and at the top of the hill was Hogon-ji Temple, the birthplace of Ippen Shonin, a notable figure in Kamakura Buddhism. It was a curious place where the temple approach was a red-light district.
After 100 years, this street where the courtesans once lived has transformed into a stylish area, with trendy facilities, eateries, and cultural venues lining the street, evolving into a new tourist destination.
