歴史をつなぎ未来に残す街の象徴

約3000年の歴史を誇り、「日本書紀」、「源氏物語」など様々な文献にも登場するなど、日本最古といわれる道後温泉。その象徴である「道後温泉本館」は、公衆浴場で初めて、国の重要文化財に指定されました。明治中期、初代道後湯之町町長であった伊佐庭如矢は、「100年の後までも、他所が真似できないようなものを作ってこそ、はじめてそれが物を言うことになる」と、本館改築の偉業を成し遂げました。
それから１２０年余。道後温泉本館はさらに未来の世代へと受け継ぐべく、保存修理工事を行っています。
歴史をつなぎ未来に残すその心意気が、今なお人々を魅了し続けるのです。

A Symbol of the City Preserving History for the Future

Boasting a history of approximately 3,000 years and appearing in various literature such as the “Nihon Shoki” and “The Tale of Genji,” Dogo Onsen is revered as Japan’s oldest hot spring. Its symbol, the Dogo Onsen Honkan, became the first public bathhouse to be designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. In the mid-Meiji era, Isaniwa Yukiya, the first mayor of Dogo Yunomachi, stated, “It is only when something cannot be imitated by others even after 100 years that it truly becomes significant,” and accomplished the remarkable feat of reconstructing the main building.
Now, more than 120 years later, new preservation and repair work is underway at the Dogo Onsen Honkan to further pass it on to future generations. This commitment to connecting history and preserving it for the future continues to captivate and inspire people to this day.
