At an elevation of 132 meters, Matsuyama Castle stands atop Mount Katsuyama, rising majestically in the heart of the Matsuyama Plain. It is one of the twelve original keeps from the Edo period that still remain, known as the “Twelve Original Keeps,” and is designated as an Important Cultural Property by the Japanese government. The castle’s keep features a complex and heavily fortified structure, making it virtually impregnable. How would you conquer it?
There are various routes to reach the keep. You can hike up one of the four castle paths, or take the ropeway or lift. Alternatively, you can choose to explore the Ninomaru Historical Garden or the Horinouchi area of Shiroyama Park at the base without climbing the mountain. Conquer it in the way that suits you best.
